What is Dual Citizenship and can I apply for it?

The Golden Visa program in Portugal, residency by investment, and fast track to an EU passport has great benefits (as do many other residency options).  However, as Portugal allows dual citizenship with many countries through treaties, this is not the case for all countries. Find out below if when you are eligible for a Portuguese passport if you can have dual citizenship or if you would have to forfeit your original passport to obtain the Portuguese/EU passport.

The following are countries that allow dual citizenship:

If your current passport falls into this latter chart, you would then need to make the choice to forfeit that passport to obtain the Portuguese passport, or just remain with permanent residency in Portugal. Permanent residency in Portugal however, does not grant the benefits of free movement of travel, work, or study throughout the Schengen area the way citizenship does, along with many other benefits.
